Since last year’s Tableau conference in New Orleans, we have been looking forward to the launch of their ‘Ask Data’tool and it has now arrived in Tableau’s latest software 2019.1 updates. This task-based tool is a union of natural language processing and expert data visualization. This new tool expands the accessibility of this platform, allowing any user regardless of their background in data analytics to ask questions of the data to create insightful visualization reports. The tool is navigated via keyboard and mouse however, the company state that they hope to release voice-activated control in the near future.
The great news is, if you already have Tableau, this will automatically update to include the Ask Data tools. This means that all your current database will be natural language enabled. In addition to the natural language functionality, the upgrade introduces; advanced data preparation, the ability to export data visualizations into PowerPoint files, user alert customization and a complete redesign of the mobile interface. The mobile app is available to iOS and Android users. Changes to the app include; improved search, favorites experience and interactive previews offline.

There is an additional cost for a Data Management Add-On for those using Tableau server. This provides access to Prep Conductor, allowing the data prep workflow to be scheduled and monitored. Tableau announced that later this year this Data Management Add-On will expand it’s capabilities to include new cataloging functions to enable the user to search for data across all data sets from a single point.
